2012 Chevy Sonic Turbocharged Engine Explained

We have had a few inquiries requesting more information related to the 2012 Turbo engine. So we dug up some general specs and video just for you guys.

2012 Chevy Sonic eCoTeC 1.4l DoHC turbocharged 4-cylinder

The 4-cylinder, 16-valve 1.4L turbo acts like two engines in one. While cruising, it gets the fuel efficiency of a small displacement engine. When you need power to pass, the turbo kicks in and it acts like a much larger displacement engine. This engine is among the most fuel-efficient 4-cylinder gas engines in the world. It is available on LT and LTZ.

Heres some math.

• 138 hp @ 4900 rpm.

• 148 lb.-ft. torque @ 2500 rpm (manual).

• 148 lb.-ft. torque @ 1850 rpm (auto).

• Peak torque arrives at low rpm, providing great off-the-line acceleration.

• Recommended fuel: regular unleaded.

• Both intake and exhaust valves feature Variable Valve Timing (VVT), which enhances efficiency throughout the engine’s powerband.

• Turbocharger is integrated into the exhaust manifold to shorten exhaust flow, virtually eliminating turbo lag.

• Water-cooled oil cooler keeps oil temperatures at optimum temperatures.

• Timing chain requires no scheduled maintenance (unlike timing belts).

• 100,000-mile tune-up interval.

• EPA-estimated fuel economy, city/hwy (mpg): – 29/40 with manual transmission
